Mortal Shell II Fast Travel and Beacon Guide

Fast travel unlocks after the Prologue, your first visit to Marrow Keep, and the collection and siphoning of at least five additional Ova. Once unlocked, you can travel to Beacons you have already tagged. Marrow Keep remains a permanent destination, and the two Prologue Beacons—Village Outskirts and Disciple's Grotto—can also be revisited.

How Beacons work

Beacons are checkpoints, recovery points, and eventually fast-travel destinations. Resting restores health, Resolve, and flask charges, but it also respawns regular enemies.

Some Beacons lead into a cleansing dungeon. Completing that objective removes nearby corruption and may open a blocked route. Major Corrupted Gate dungeons usually contain three additional Beacons, although one contains four. The final Beacon appears after the main boss and provides 26 Ova for campaign progression.

Fast travel only includes locations you have reached and tagged. A Beacon visible on a map is not a usable destination until you interact with it, and a corruption-blocked gate may still require cleansing before the route beyond it opens.

The same five-Ova progression upgrade that enables travel also lets you remove corrupted vines and tendrils blocking overworld passages.

Post-launch Beacon updates

The official post-launch notes document additional daytime-only Beacons across Fainweald and Mammon in the August 29 update, so the route list below should not be treated as an exhaustive checkpoint checklist. The September 5 update gives smaller Beacons distinct icons in the Mether's Breath travel menu and fixes Ruk appearing at map stations when you warp to an overlapping Beacon.

Maps, crow icons, and manual markers

Ruk, the crow-like guide, provides regional maps from his perches. Each map reveals only a limited section, so finding one map does not expose an entire region.

Use the map in three layers:

  1. Find Ruk's crow icon in unexplored grey territory and reveal that section first.
  2. Tag the nearest Beacon before taking side paths so a death does not erase route progress.
  3. Place manual markers on unopened chests, blocked passages, and challenges you intend to revisit.

Dungeon icons are not a reliable completion checklist on their own. After looting a dungeon and finishing its trial, apply your own completion marker so future route planning does not send you back through cleared content.

Useful early Beacons

  • Widow's Overlook: The default entry point into Fainweald and the best starting direction for Tiel and nearby early upgrades.
  • Mushroom Village: A safe return point for the settlement, its hidden key route, and nearby optional content.
  • Mushroom Village Gate: Opens the route into the Glutted Mire Corrupted Gate after cleansing.
  • Outskirts of Mammon: The default Mammon entry point, but its nearby enemies are dangerous for an early build.
  • Village Outskirts and Disciple's Grotto: The Prologue checkpoints remain available after fast travel unlocks.

Pair these priorities with the Beginner Guide if you are deciding where to spend your first upgrades.

Fainweald Beacons and maps

Widow's Overlook and map 1

Widow's Overlook is available by default as the initial Fainweald destination. To reach Ruk's first local map, travel south past the Great Arbiter of Flesh. At the base of the rock formation, use the air current to jump to the perch near Tiel's grave.

The Great Arbiter is an early miniboss, not a requirement for taking the map. Pass it and return later if the fight is beyond your current build.

Blackridge Pass and map 2

Travel north from Widow's Overlook toward the trial altar. Two rope bridges stand beyond it:

  • The left bridge leads to Ruk and the map.
  • The right bridge leads to the Blackridge Pass Beacon.

Both are close to Proxima's early Shell location, making this a useful second checkpoint.

Mushroom Village and Mushroom Village Gate

Enter the yard to the left of Tiel's grave and run past the Dancing Hags to tag the Mushroom Village Beacon.

From the village area, follow the rope bridges southeast to the Mushroom Village Gate Beacon. Cleanse it to enter the Glutted Mire Corrupted Gate. The attached route source recommends this as the first major dungeon.

The village also contains the hidden arch described in the Mushroom Village Key Guide.

One-Legged Wolf and map 3

After gaining the ability to clear corrupted tendrils, return to the trial altar between Mushroom Village and Mushroom Village Gate. Beyond the chest guarded by Toxic Cultists, remove the tendrils and continue a short distance to the One-Legged Wolf Beacon and Ruk's next map.

The nearby tavern contains the Troubadour's Lute, and the Gragu Shell can be acquired in the same area.

Stonebled Gate

Go to the Stones of Remembrance graveyard and cleanse the northernmost corrupted vines. Continue to the bone gate, jump across the large chasm, and follow the northern caverns. Climb the steps to reach Stonebled Gate.

Cleanse this Beacon to open the Sanguine Caverns Corrupted Gate.

Gloomshade Grove

From Stonebled Gate, take the tunnel leading down into the lower section. Follow the winding passage into the cavern where hunters are fighting a large Grisha. The Gloomshade Grove Beacon sits at the cliff edge beyond that encounter.

You do not need to join the entire fight. Run past the Grisha Hunters and tag the Beacon first if survival is the priority.

Citadel of Penance and map 4

Both targets are inside the Citadel of Penance:

  • The Beacon is to the right of the main gate.
  • Ruk's map perch is near the central market stalls.

Soldiers patrol the interior, so establish the Beacon before crossing the market for the map.

Outskirts of Nochte and map 5

Travel west into the swamplands. The Beacon is along the shallow edge of the swamp. Ruk's map is higher up on a bluff near a ruined building.

The lower water around the Beacon is the safer place to secure a checkpoint before climbing toward the map.

Nochtean Gate

The final Fainweald overworld Beacon is in the far southwest, directly outside the Prisoners' Domain Corrupted Gate. Tag it before entering the fortress dungeon.

Ruins of Mammon Beacons and maps

Outskirts of Mammon and map 1

Outskirts of Mammon is pre-cleansed and acts as the default travel entry for the region. Ruk's map is on a nearby bluff close to the catapult that uses the Makeshift Projectile.

The enemies beyond this Beacon are a sharp early difficulty increase. Tag the point and map, then return to Fainweald if the surrounding groups take too long to defeat.

Abandoned Outpost

From the catapult near the first map, look down for the path leading toward a bone gate at the cliff. Use the gate to cross the gap, loop around, and drop to the Abandoned Outpost Beacon.

This checkpoint is easy to miss and valuable because the Night Mode vendor known as the Collector appears nearby only while hard difficulty is active.

High Lord's Courtyard and map 2

Continue northwest to reach the High Lord's Courtyard. The Beacon and Ruk's perch stand close together. A crypt just beyond them contains the Lazlo Shell.

Gate of Mammon

From High Lord's Courtyard, use the southern exit and ride the elevator down. Take the jump gate toward Lonesome Spire. Cleanse the Gate of Mammon Beacon to open the Withered Shoals Corrupted Gate.

This checkpoint is also a practical rest point before climbing Lonesome Spire.

Mammon map 3

Ruk's next perch is approximately halfway between the eastern side of Lonesome Spire and the quarry in the Deserted Slums. Enemies crowd the route and can attack while you approach the perch, so clear enough space to interact safely.

Castigator's Keep and map 4

The fastest route begins by heading south from Outskirts of Mammon and using the jump route across the large gap. Several enemies guard the landing. Turn right after crossing, climb the steps, and tag the Castigator's Keep Beacon.

An alternate path reaches the Keep through the mining and construction area on the lower bluffs outside Lonesome Spire. Ruk's map is on the cliffside pass between the fortress and the mining area, guarded by Grisha Hunters.

Gate of Infinity and map 5

From Castigator's Keep, cross the courtyard and ride the lift upward. Defeat the Starved Harridan miniboss and continue into the wide pylon area.

  • Ruk and the map are on the right.
  • The Thief's Stone trial is on the left.
  • The Gate of Infinity Beacon is straight ahead at the top of the steps.

Cultists surrounding the Beacon are immune until you strike or shoot the blue-flame lantern. Remove that protection before trying to clear them. Cleanse Gate of Infinity to enter the Faded Citadel Corrupted Gate.

The Silent Steps

Return to the pylon area containing map 5 and the Thief's Stone trial. Cross the chasm on the stone pathway and follow the route until two Giant Snails guard the Silent Steps Beacon.

The nearby bone gate leads toward the Sariel boss encounter.

Abbey Entrance and map 6

For the shortest Beacon route, return to Outskirts of Mammon and run to the southeastern edge of the landmass. Avoid the bear traps, use the bone gate to jump east, and continue through the corridor until the lit Abbey Entrance Beacon appears.

An alternate approach uses the air currents beyond the Revenant Graves to climb toward the Abbey.

Ruk's map is south of the Revenant Graves. Ascend through the Sester enemies and Exploding Stalkers until you reach the tower with the offering chest. Light its three candles, then continue up the spiral stairs to Ruk's perch.

Sester's Gate

The final Mammon overworld Beacon is at the southeastern corner of Sester's Abbey. Numerous Sester enemies cover the approach, so bypass unnecessary fights and reach the checkpoint first. Cleansing it opens the Conquered Temple Corrupted Gate.

Fast-travel and navigation mistakes

  • Expecting travel immediately after the Prologue: You still need the first Marrow Keep visit and five additional siphoned Ova.
  • Passing a Beacon without tagging it: Discovery on the map does not add it as a destination.
  • Resting without considering respawns: Healing also repopulates regular enemies along the route.
  • Assuming one Ruk map reveals a region: Each perch uncovers only a local section.
  • Entering a Corrupted Gate before securing its exterior Beacon: Tag and cleanse the checkpoint first.
  • Treating dungeon icons as completed automatically: Use manual completion markers.
  • Fighting immune Gate of Infinity cultists: Break the blue-flame lantern effect first.
  • Using Mammon as the first full exploration route: Widow's Overlook and Mushroom Village provide a gentler early circuit.

If you have not yet established Marrow Keep or the two tutorial Beacons, follow the Opening Walkthrough before planning a regional circuit.
